I put 5 stars by default, having bought this dvd as a gift to a friend in this time of Christmas! We have seen others since then (for the worse and rarely for the better) but at the time, "the umbrellas of Cherbourg" was a revolution by being the first musical, "total", where every word, emotion and almost until the breaths are sung. The music is not here to glamorize or enhance reality, but to express all the whisperings, all the subtleties. Level scenario, I suspect Demy to have somewhat pumped "fever in the blood" of Kazan, released 3 years earlier, so the similarities abound ; the end in is even almost identical. So it is a love-drama of adolescence, the programmed death of all the dreams of the absolute : two young lovebirds see one by one their ideals crushed by the reality, starting with parents slyly embittered by the passion of two young people. It is full of colors, of music, it is often gay, and paradoxically, a tragic watermark, just waiting to arise. Achievement, aesthetic, music, performances are close to perfection. Has really aged badly, and yet when I was young it was extraordinary, but the proportion song is too big compared to the action of the film, the children today are struggling to adhere to these songs too dated and the tire too quickly they don't even remain until the end.
